Virginia vit seule avec son fils Emmett dans une petite ville des États-Unis. Depuis 20 ans, elle est la maîtresse du shérif local, Richard Tipton, un mormon pratiquant qui compte se présenter comme sénateur aux prochaines élections. Virginia, qui refuse de faire soigner une grave maladie, prétend être enceinte de lui, ce qui le pousse à fuir. Emmett est de son côté amoureux de la fille du shérif, Jessie, et compte bien l'épouser. Il décide donc de la rejoindre dans sa foi. Virginia, qui est atteinte d'une maladie mentale, essaie quant à elle de rendre la vie meilleure pour son fils.
